We welcome you to join us for an online conversation with Metahaven and Stefanie Hessler. Click here to join the conversation via zoom.
The artist collective Metahaven, who are known for their work in film, textile, and graphic design, are currently presenting the exhibition Capture at Kunsthall Trondheim. The show includes a new film of the same title that explores fundamental questions in philosophy, science, and everyday life, including: What is reality? How do we define consciousness? What constitutes knowledge?
On the occasion of their exhibition, Metahaven will speak to the curator of the show, Stefanie Hessler, Director of Swiss Institute in New York, to discuss the themes of their new film as well as other works on view. Together, they will explore lichens as biosensors, discuss how fundamental physics and art approach knowledge and uncertainty, and how networked communication technologies democratize claims to truth and reality, but are at the same time also vulnerable to propaganda.
“It is unsurprising, perhaps, that the collective’s latest film, Capture (2022), deals with the fundamental questions of what reality is, how we define consciousness, and what constitutes knowledge. These queries are negotiated in the film through the lenses of art and science, as well as through life. They are daunting questions to discuss, broaching the core of metaphysics, scientific experimentation, and politics. The artists sense that between the fronts of objectivism and relativism, in discussing reality, you cannot win.” - Stefanie Hessler
