Artist biography:
Christina Kubisch (b. 1948 Bremen, Germany) belongs to the first generation of sound artists. Christina Kubisch's work displays an artistic development which is often described as Gesamtkunstwerk – the discovery of acoustic space and the dimension of time in visual arts on one hand, and a redefinition of relationships between material and form in music on the other.
Inspired by the work of John Cage, Pauline Oliveros and other composers of the NY scene in the early 1970s who connected the fields of conceptual art and avantgarde music, the artist has since then created sound installations developing her own techniques, using for example magnetic induction, which transcend the hearing range of the average human.
Kubisch has studied both electronics and composition, and has a long history of working with sound beyond the confines of the static presentation allowed by the concert stage. She was one of the first to use the term “soundscape” to describe a listening experience where the listener is contained “inside” a fluctuating field of sound. In Kubisch’s installations, visitors’ movements and sounds captured by electronics often add an element of chance to the experience.
She has participated in international festivals such as the Venice Biennale (1980, 1982 and 2021), documenta 8 (1987) and Ars Electronica (1987,2010 and 2019). She has received numerous awards and prizes, such as the 2021 Giga-Hertz Award from the ZKM for her lifetime achievement. From 1994 until 2013, Kubisch was professor of audio-visual arts at the art academy in Saarbrücken, where she founded the department for sound art. She has been a member of Akademie der Künste since 1997. She lives and works in Berlin.
