“Skillingsviser” are a cornerstone of Norwegian cultural history, amongst the oldest printed matter in the Nordic region and were in circulation for around 400 years. Kunsthall Trondheim will host literary historian Siv Gøril Brandtzæg who will introduce her research on the subject; research which has been fundamental in developing Tongues of Fire as an exhibition.

One of the most exciting skillingsviser in the Gunnerus Library collection tells the tale of the fire of 1681 which led to the total redesign of the city. Siv will share this story and others with us and frame them in the context of the exhibition and her wider research.

Siv’s talk will be followed by a one-off performance of the ballad for the first time since the 17th century by Trøndelag Theatre’s Øyvind Brandtzæg and musician Kriss Stemland.
