Industrial exploitation of natural resources is often presented as degradation of nature. Paradoxically, however, through industrial innovation, we also get to know nature and its creatures better – both in the form of more scientific knowledge and of opportunities for new ethical and aesthetical acknowledgment. As an example, Siri Granum Carson will discuss aquaculture as an important and growing, but also controversial, industry in Norway. Aquaculture involves major intervention in nature but is also a signifier of changes in people’s knowledge, values, and aesthetics.
Siri Granum Carson is associate professor of Applied Ethics at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, NTNU.
