Before Christmas, it was announced that Maria Veie Sandvik had been invited as guest editor for KF 1 / 2019.
This time, KUNSTforum wanted to focus on Berlin, and Sandvik rose to the challenge. Under the theme, “The Berlin of the Nordics” there are articles about Icelandic expats, explosive stage art, historical Berlin bohemians, the Berghain nightclub, and features on a number of Berlin-based artists – ranging from the artistic career of Dagny Juel, which was tragically cut short, to Lars Ramberg, who bought a section of the Berlin Wall in order to place it outside the front of Gråmølna. The common thread running through the contents could be summed up by Wagner’s ideal of gesamtkunstwerk.
– The goal has been to create a portrait of this creative Klondike of Europe. Berlin is a place to which artists from all over the world have gravitated in the past decade, and I have asked nineteen of them why they chose this city. I thought perhaps they were inspired by other artists to go there, but most of them told me of a yearning to be able to breathe, a place where you do not have to defend your artistic practice, says Maria Veie Sandvik.
– For me, having returned here after seven years in Berlin and twenty in Oslo, the fact that KUNSTforum is launching for the first time in my hometown of Trondheim, feels extra special!
