One block, one big celebration!
On August 29, 2026, from 12:00 to 23:00, BLOCK PARTY brings together the many creative minds of Trondheims kulturkvartal, the city's culture quarter.
All day and into the night, events unfold across the whole block: inside Kunsthall Trondheim, SELLANRAA Bok & Bar,Trondheim Folkebiblioteket, and Liitteraturhuset i Trondheim, and outdoors on Søndre gate and Barnas torg, the children's square at Peter Egges plass. Wherever you turn, from the culture quarter to the children's square, something is happening.
BLOCK PARTY takes its inspiration from Haitian-American artist Jelsen Lee Innocent's exhibition The World, The Flesh and The Devil, on view at Kunsthall Trondheim, with the artist’s communities as its guiding spirit.
Drawing on New York cookouts and the neighborhood celebrations and festivals of Haiti, BLOCK PARTY aims to do what those traditions have always done: gather people, welcome everyone in, and turn the street into a stage of shared joy. Haiti beats at the heart of BLOCK PARTY, just as it does in Innocent's exhibition. On August 29 that heartbeat spills into the streets on its own terms: proud, creative and impossible to ignore.
During the event, both exhibitions at Kunsthall Trondheim will be open to the public: The World, The Flesh and The Devil by Jelsen Lee Innocent and National Theatre by Jamie Fitzpatrick. Kunsthall Trondheim will also host screenings of short films by two Haitian directors, Isha Rosemond and Maksaens Denis, followed by a discussion with Jelsen Lee Innocent.
At Trondheim Folkebiblioteket an exhibition highlights Haitian literature alongside important texts from post-colonial and Caribbean authors. Just outside the library, on Peter Egges plass, Kunsthall Trondheim hosts an afternoon workshop exploring the techniques behind Haitian festival flags. Peter Egges plass is also where visitors will find delicious Haitian-Creole food from John B's BBQ and an outdoor bar. As the evening goes on, DJs take over: Trondheim's own Fay and acclaimed Haitian-Canadian DJ Gayance will ramp up the party into the night.
Over at SELLENRAA you'll find a more laid-back atmosphere and a second bar, plus an evening conversation with writer and activist Ingvill Konradssen, hosted by Litteraturhuset i Trondheim.
