In collaboration with Minimalen Short Film Festival, Kunsthall Trondheim is pleased to present works by Ane Hjort Guttu; Furniture Isn’t Just Furniture (2017) and Freedom Requires Free People (2011).
In Furniture Isn’t Just Furniture we encounter a woman and a man who have settled inside the display exhibitions of an IKEA warehouse, where they alternately read aloud from the marketing catalogue and discuss their relationship in a language consisting mainly of hackneyed phrases. Freedom Requires Free People presents an 8 year old boy at a primary school in Oslo. The film follows him through interviews and during school hours, and looks at the conflict between his strong desire for freedom and participation and the framework put forward by the school.
The films are made with a five years interval, but both circulates around central questions in Guttu’s artistic practice: How do we relate the to the power structures that surrounds us? What restrains us from being free? And what does a potential freedom look like?
